What is Scholastic Theology?

Scholastic theology followed their predecessors, the early "Christian" apologists who were succeeded by the Patristic theologians to advanced many of the doctrines that these predecessors cultivated during their era.  The Scholastic theologians advanced the "Logos" doctrine from its earliest form to its advanced form, namely that the two distinct sciences, theology and philosophy, agree.  That they are distinct in that philosophy relies on reason alone and that theology uses the truths derived from revelation and that they agree, must agree in that God is the author of all truth, and it is impossible to think that God would "teach" anything in the natural order that would contradict what he "teaches" in the supernatural order.  The Patristic era held the same principles, so to speak, but held them in flux, in solution, i.e., not in crystallized form or expression.

Various Scholastics intermittently tried to elevate philosophy with theology as theophany or in theosophy; or at time tried to bring theology down to the level of philosophy and define and identify them both through a Rationalistic system.  Scholastics were also distinguished from other theologies in that they rigorously utilized the dialectical method to develop their ideas, albeit in quite barbaric form.  They were different from the rationalists in that they held the conviction that reason is to be used in the elucidation of divine truth and in defense of the teachings of Faith.

When the view that "what is true in theology may be false in philosophy" became prominent (promulgated by the mystics), Scholasticism ceased to exist.  It was Descartes that lead the way in dissolving Scholastic Theology and back into Mysticism, ending the Scholastic era.  Nonetheless, all these theology models were heavily influenced by either Platonism or Aristoteleanism or both and in some cases the complete adoption of these Greek philosophies.

Some of the main beliefs, secular contributions and characteristics of Scholasticism are as follows:

1. Scholastics adopted all the details of the Aristotelean system relative to ethics, nature, logic and knowledge, i.e., Moderate Realism and Moderate Intellectualism.

2. Scholasticism avoids Innatism, Sensism and took a strong stand against Subjectivism.

3. Scholasticism's metaphysics added to the Aristotelean system relative to discussion on the nature of personality.

4. Scholasticism laid a new foundation for the study of political organizations utilizing Aristotle's scientific definition of the origin and purpose of civil society.

5. Improved the precision in the modern languages of Western Europe as a result of their hallmark barbaric use of dialectic disquisitions.
