What is Normative Judaism?

Normative Judaism is basically the Rabbinic literary tradition that survived the period from 332 BCE through 640 CE and that remained normal within the rabbinic circles.  Normative Judaism ran concurrent with Rabbinic Judaism as later Rabbinic Judaism was the only Jewish tradition that survived beyond the normative era.  Rab Yahushua Mashia came on the scene during the middle of the Normative Judaism era, who challenged Normative Judaism of his day on many fronts.  By the time Mashia  began his ministry, Greek influences had made their mark on Normative Judaism, but not nearly as much as it would over the centuries that would follow.

Normative Judaism placed no value judgment on the non-normative era of Judaism, i.e., the historical legitimacy, piety, sincerity or morality of the likely majority of Jews that lived outside the blessed "normative" traditions.  In other words, the Apocalyptic Jews, Essenes, Pharisees, Sadducees and Zealots (and possibly others) were all part of the necessary developmental fabric of earlier Jewish normative traditions, nonetheless still considered "non-normative".

A splinter group of Jews who decided to follow a Reformed Normative Judaism, as led by Rab Yahushua Mashia, grew rapidly throughout Israel and the then known world predominately through the missionary efforts of Apostle Paul.  This Reformed Normative Judaism was ahead of its time in that it resembled Rabbinic Judaism as far as not conducting animal sacrifices and needed no physical temple. One main distinction is Rabbinic Judaism came into existence by force whereas the Reformed Normative Judaism emerged by choice.  Eventually this splinter group became known as "Christians" as identified from the outside.  Sadly, however, this new reformed Normative Judaism began to fall prey to the influences of the Greeks as well, led by the second and third century "Christian" Apologists, succeeded by the Patristics, who were succeeded by the Scholastics, who were succeeded by the Mystics.  The form, style, doctrines, ethics and liturgy of the Reformed Normative Judaism was all but lost.

The reformation launched by Luther was but a small attempt to revert or reform some of the developed doctrines that came out of what came to be known as the Roman Catholic Church, the parent organization in which was the home of the Patristics, the Scholastics and the Mystics.  Unfortunately he (Luther) and his successors did not go far enough, even the many protestant denominations that sprang out of this reformation have not gone far enough.
