Mystic Theologians followed their
predecessors, the Scholastics,
who succeeded the
Patristics before them,
who succeeded
the early "Christian" Apologists before them. The Mystics
distrusted reason and emphasized intuition and
contemplation. The Mystics did not use Rationalism, like
the both the Patristics and the Scholastics and ardently
rejected dialectics used by the Apologists, the Patristics and
the Scholastics. The main position of the Mystics in this
regard was this, "what is true in theology may be false in
philosophy". This view, led by Descartes, in practice, if
not in theory, brought the Scholasticism era to an end.
However, there has been a modern revival of Scholasticism, more
properly called Neo-Scholasticism.
Some would argue that the Apologists were Mystics heading in the
directions of the Patristics and the Scholastics and the era of
Mysticism was a full circle back to early Apologetics. One
could also argue that Mashia was a "mystic" of sorts (more in
form rather than belief) in that he denounced the Pharisaical
method of interpreting the law, a practice also condemned by the
Prophet Isaiah much earlier (the
“line upon line, precept on precept" method) (Isaiah 28:9-10,
12-13; Matthew 15:3-9; Mark 7:9-13). This method (similar to
dialectics) was used by the Jews, which, according to Mashia,
often reduced and dwindled the law of YHVH into ineffectiveness.
That is why YHVH wanted to teach them (the Jews), but they would
not listen. It was prophesied that they would also reduce
the New Covenant into "none effect" which would cause them to
"fall backward, be injured and snared and captured", which came
to pass.
